A Legal Shift Towards Digital Inclusion
A recent article from Emerging Europe highlights that starting June 28 of this year, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will come into force, requiring the digital world to be accessible to people with disabilities. This law applies to key goods and services such as e-books, ATMs, websites, and mobile apps.
Fintech companies, which use software to improve or automate financial services—such as mobile banking, online payments, investment platforms, and cryptocurrency exchanges—are now under pressure to comply. While fintech aims to make financial services faster, cheaper, and more widely available, ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities is now essential for true financial inclusion.
A Widening Gap
As reported by Emerging Europe, “Interfaces must now work seamlessly with assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice navigation, and alternative input devices,” and all content must be “perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.”
A study by TestDevLab reveals that not all fintechs are prepared to meet this challenge. As the article notes, “with 70 per cent of fintech platforms failing to meet basic accessibility requirements, people with disabilities are being marginalised, contributing to a widening tech accessibility gap.”
Inclusion Is Good Business
Following accessibility guidelines is not only a legal and ethical obligation, but also a strategic business opportunity. By becoming more inclusive, fintech companies, like all others, can broaden their market and boost revenue.
