Jan '04 FTSE100 Websites report and Ranking, top site MMO2, bottom BT plc

Top of the league and best site overall was MMO2, in second place Smith & Nephew plc. Again at the bottom of the table representing the poorest site overall was BT plc.

- 4 sites had no errors Granada plc, Carnival Corp plc, LloydsTSB and HSBC, with 39 having 10 or less – again improved from last time.

- Only one site had over 1,000 errors in this test, 41 sites had over 100 errors – not as good as last report.

- 41 sites tested passed basic meta data test for their front page – more than last time.

- 25 of the sites tested passed all basic speed tests, looking at first page download, simulated as being viewed by a home [56k], ADSL [512k] and user with corporate access [1mb], last report had 20 sites passing.

- Site with the lowest number of warnings [poor html] was Severn Trent; Dixons had the highest number of warnings, with over 130,000. Improvement from last report.

- Site with fastest overall server response was Shire Pharmaceuticals Group plc, with an average page response of 0.04 seconds. The site with the slowest response time again was Schroders plc where average page response was over 16 seconds per page. Overall site performance improved when compared with the previous report.

- Site with highest download speed was Amersham, and BT plc again had the slowest download speed of sites tested again [BT also the second slowest for server response].

Accessibility testing
- 8 sites achieved 100% compliance; HSBC, GKN PLC, GUS, PLC, Freinds Provident, Alliance Uniform, RBS, BP & Riotinto
- 7 of the sites achieved a greater than 90% [but not 100%] compliance
- 23 sites scored between 25% and 90% compliance for the pages tested
- 11 sites scored between 10% and 25% compliance for the pages tested
- 49 sites were less than 10% compliant, 10 sites had no pages compliant.

The tests completed address only a number of the requirements for the mandatory priorities 1 only.

The results of the accessibility testing currently do not affect the overall ratings or rankings for the league tables contained in this report. The range of tests [Web Accessibility Initiative WAI] that can be completed automatically are limited, 100% compliance with the automated tests does not mean 100% compliance to the requirements.
