New regulations mean public sector organisations have a legal duty to make sure websites and apps meet accessibility requirements. Under The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No.2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (WCAG 2.1) regulation Public sector websites published before 23 September 2018 must be compliant by 23 September 2020, with apps meeting the regulation by 23 June 2021.

Research from national disability charity Scope has found that millions of disabled people could be missing out on vital online services and information due to website inaccessibility. After carrying out accessibility tests on council websites, the charity revealed that nine out of 10 of England’s biggest councils are failing to meet website regulations.
