This week, Helen discusses the purpose of a postmaster email address and why it should be set.

Sitemorse assesses email addresses found on your site. In the Email section of a Report, select the category 'Email' and then the menu item on the right called 'Addresses' to view the 'Email Findings - broken down by domain' page. Any domains that have errors or warnings with email addresses will be highlighted in red or orange respectively. Select the email domain to view the email.

Sometimes errors can occur regarding a postmaster email address. "postmaster" is a default email address defined by internet standard RFC 5321. All email domains are required to have this address, which is supposed to be read by the administrator of the mail system. If we are not given a specific email address to assess at a customer's domain, we will default to testing the postmaster address (e.g. postmaster@example.com).
